Not on Display

This mezzotint engraving, “Washington and His Family,” was printed in 1864 by William Sartain. The print includes George and Martha Washington, and their two grandchildren, Washington Parke Custis and Eleanor Parke Custis. The fifth person in the print is Christopher Sheels, an enslaved worker who served as Washington’s valet after the Revolutionary War. Additionally, Washington’s sword is lying on a chair in the print – the sword’s position symbolizes Washington’s resignation as general and his return to peace at Mount Vernon.
