Interior of the Pantheon (Veduta interna del Panteon)

Not on Display

An architectural feat for its time, the Pantheon stays standing in modern times despite its origin in Rome thousands of years ago. However, its pristine condition required extensive restoration, as acknowledged by Piranesi in the inscription underneath the engraving. Etched figures in the scene meander throughout the temple as a man rests on his knees to pray. Without the crumbling stones and overgrown foliage—unlike other engravings in this collection—the details of this work imply that the Pantheon, used then as a church, survived the passage of time and remains as an escape from an otherwise crumbling world.
